Taxi Bosses'New move angers people

Furious residents have resisted the new practice of making them wait forever inside stationary minibus taxis.
Taxis used to drive around the kasi, picking up passengers, and taking them straight to Benoni.
But not anymore . . .
Lately, the local association makes them sit inside taxis and wait for them to get full before being driven to their destinations!
That’s why they blocked a busy main road with stones and tree trunks – to send a message to the Benoni Taxi Association!
It happened at Etwatwa in Ekurhuleni.
They said they were tired of being at the mercy of taximen, and that the practice had been imposed on them.
Some said they were worried they would lose their jobs as they were often late for work after waiting in long queues in the morning.
But the taxi association said the rule was put in place to protect commuters.
Chairman Dumisani Ntuli said: “We want to avoid a situation where taxis leave the township while carrying a small number of people.
“Sometimes it turns out that minibus drivers who do this are not registered and commuters end up being raped and killed.
“We are doing this to protect women and children,” Ntuli told Daily Sun.
“We’re a caring association and we want people to know that.
“Change is never an easy thing, but we appeal to the people to bear with us.”
