A family in Limpopo is trying to pick up the pieces after the unexpected death of their 8-year old daughter.
The family needs answers from two Limpopo hospitals whom they accuse of killing their darling child.
The tragedy began in March this year when Shongile Mathebula of Lulekani outside Phalaborwa started vomiting non-stop. Doctors at Mankweng Hospital near Polokwane diagnosed her with a ruptured gallbladder.
She underwent surgery.
According to her mum, Cecilia Mathebula, the family was informed afterwards that Shongile's heart had stopped functioning during the operation.
As a result, her brain was damaged and she became paralysed.
Cecilia said the whole family is still shocked at how quickly Shongile went from vomiting to being barely alive.
She was transferred from Mankweng Hospital to Maphuta Malatjie Hospital on 1 June.
Her mum said she spent most of her time by her daughter's bedside at Maphutha Malatjie Hospital until her death on 12 August.
The young girl was buried on Saturday.
Human Rights Commission's Victor Mavhidhula said the commission has been informed about the issue while Shongile was still alive and in hospital.
He said they are still waiting for the report from their team that visited the family to investigate the alleged human rights violation by the hospitals.
Limpopo Health Provincial Department spokesman, Thambiso Teffo said the department is saddened by the passing of Sibongile.
Teffo said they are also investigating the matter and promised the department will engage the family to try to explain what happened.
