FORMER Trending SA presenter Shaka Sisulu has joined the list of high-profile people who are accused of allegedly abusing women during Women’s Month.
Shaka was arrested last week for allegedly assaulting his baby mama, Lerato Sedi, in Sandton, north of Joburg.
This after the two had an argument about his financial contribution to their baby.
Lerato told police in an affidavit that the problem started when she sent Shaka an SMS about papgeld.
She claimed he requested to meet her the following morning.
“On my arrival at his house, I started explaining to him that I hadn’t received the money I asked him to help me with. He told me he wouldn’t pay,” she said.
Lerato said they started having an argument, and she threaten to take him to court.
According to her police statement, when she tried to leave, Shaka pulled her back, saying he was not finished talking.
The statement read, in part: “When I tried to leave, he slammed the door on my right arm and I sustained injuries and bruises to my right arm.”
Shaka was arrested and released on R500 bail. He was warned to appear in court on Thursday.
But Shaka allegedly chickened out when he saw a crowd of reporters attending the case of assault against Deputy Minister of Education Mduduzi Manana.
Court officials said Shaka failed to appear in court on Thursday.
A warrant for his arrest was issued, but withheld for 14 days to see if he does appear before his next court date.
His bail was also revoked but re-instated when he appeared in court on Friday.
The warrant for his arrest was also cancelled after Shaka produced a copy of a medical certificate showing that he was sick.
His lawyer allegedly made an arrangement for him to appear the following day to avoid the media hype.
His case was postponed to next month.
Lerato confirmed she had opened a case of assault against Shaka, but refused to divulge more information.
“The matter is with the court and there are a lot of things involved,” she said.
Yesterday in an email, Shaka said: “I can confirm that I appeared in court on Friday 11 August on a charge of assault. In a statement, the mother of my child claimed I pushed her against a door. I deny this claim.
“I can confirm that indeed she came to my house for a meeting last Thursday morning. The purpose of the meeting was solely to renegotiate the current terms of maintenance for our child, which have been more than adequate for the child’s upkeep.
“Other than her leaving my house upset that I did not acceed to her proposals, I can confirm with absolute certainty that nothing else happened. Absolutely no assault of any kind took place.
“I’m baffled as to how our disagreement on a maintenance issue suddenly turned into an assault claim. I also am not sure of what the motive of this could be. My family has since insisted on mediation on this maintenance difference and, as we both clearly care a lot about the best interest of our child. We’ve agreed that we shall take this up.
“If this mediation fails to get us to an agreement, we will defer to the maintenance court. At the end of the day, the only important thing in this apparent dispute is the best interest of our child.
“We have always maintained a cordial relation because of our common interest to raise our child well. I’m sorry that my stance on our maintenance dispute has caused her feelings to be hurt.”
