Mining union Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) says the site where the Marikana miners were killed is not a space for political campaigning and the branch leaders and widows need to be consulted before any surprise visits.
ANC presidential hopeful Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma was chased away from the koppie in the North West on Tuesday, where 34 miners were shot and killed by police in 2012.
During the five-year commemoration event in Marikana last week, Amcu’s Jimmy Gama made it clear that the area should not be used for political campaigning.
“All of them, irrespective of their political party, to come and use this commemoration for their political campaigns.”
Dlamini-Zuma attempted to lay a wreath at the koppie on Tuesday but she was chased away.
Amcu president Joseph Mathunjwa says the same happened to Maimane.
“Maimane also went there and he was stopped. This is not an area for canvasing membership. It’s a very sensitive area and the wounds are still raw and open.”
African National Congress (ANC) members have not been present during the commemoration events in Marikana, however Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema and others were present last week’s event as they have been in the past, but not for political purposes.
