JOHANNESBURG - Trade union federation Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) says its central executive committee meeting next week will discuss campaigns to put pressure on the African National Congress (ANC) to recall President Jacob Zuma.
Cosatu has called on Zuma to step down and banned him from all its events.
The federation’s Sizwe Pamla says now that the ANC has failed to respond to their call for Zuma to be ousted, another plan must be made. recall
"The issue will be tabled in front of the central executive committee for guidance on some of the steps that we can take and options that they think we should explore, in exerting pressure or making the position of the federation much louder to those in power."
The trade federation will also discuss the decision by the South African Communist Party (SACP) to contest elections alone for the first time.
When the communist party resolved at the end of its national congress in July to contest future elections, it made it clear that it needs the backing of the federation's workers.
Pamla says that while the CEC will debate the SACP’s decision, only the federation's special congress next year can give the green light for Cosatu to support the communist party.
“The CEC will have to reflect on it, we’ll also allow affiliates to be able to come in and express their own views and positions.”
