Two maternity wards horror at two in Ekurhuleni on Friday.
A portion of the ceiling at Tembisa Hospital’s maternity ward caved in, narrowly missing mums and their babies.
One staff member was injured.
The same thing happened at Pholosong Hospital in Tsakane, when part of the hospital’s ceiling collapsed in the bathroom of a maternity ward. An employee suffered minor injuries.
According to sources at Tembisa Hospital, the ceiling was damaged by water after a storm that hit the area last year.
DA Gauteng shadow health MEC Jack Bloom said : “I am relieved there were no serious injuries.
“These incidents highlight the need for building inspections to identify weak points in hospitals.”
Gauteng Health spokesman Khutso Rabothata said services were not affected at the hospitals.
He said: “We are glad there have been no serious injuries or loss of life.”
