A man was killed and 12 others injured Thursday morning when his SUV and minibus taxi collided on the N12, about 10 km outside Potchefstroom.
ER24 Spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics arrived on the scene shortly after 05h30 "this morning" to find the SUV on the side of the road while the minibus taxi had come to a stop roughly 500 metres away.
"Upon closer inspection, paramedics discovered the body of a man, believed to be the driver of the SUV, lying a short distance away from his vehicle. Assessments showed that the man had sustained numerous injuries and showed no signs of life. Unfortunately, the man had already succumbed to his injuries," said Meiring.
As many as 12 passengers who were in the minibus taxi sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate. They were all treated on the scene before they were taken to Potchefstroom Provincial Hospital for further care.
Local authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.
