A seven-year-old girl, who was apparently on holiday with her family, is missing after being swept off the rocks at Betty’s Bay on Friday, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.
The girl was apparently with her mother when the waves swept her away around 16:35, said NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon.
He said rescue crafts were launched in every rough sea conditions with a rising Spring tide in 4.8m swells.
Various rescue authorities assisted in an extensive sea and shore operation.
NSRI Hermanus and police divers would resume the search at first light.
"The family, from Claremont, Cape Town, believed to be on a weekend getaway at Betty's Bay, are receiving assistance," said Lambinon.
