Teen caught with R500k

A Lentegeur laaitie is being investigated by the police’s Organised Crime Unit after he was caught with R500 000 in cash.
Police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, says the 15-year-old was caught by wakker police officers in Table View on Monday 5 June when he tried to evade police during a vehicle checkpoint.
“When the boy noticed the police, he turned his vehicle around and sped away. Table View police officers started to chase the vehicle until it came to a halt in Sandown Road in Parklands,” he says.
Van Wyk says the teenager was interviewed by police and he told officers he did not have a licence and that is why he drove away.
However, during a search, police found R500 000 in cash in the boot of the vehicle and Van Wyk says the laaitie started telling police lies.
“The boy stated that he is 18 years old. When asked where he obtained the large amount of cash, the boy stated that he is 15 years old and refused to speak further. The parents of the boy were contacted.”
The teen was arrested and appeared at the juvenile court at the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court where he was charged with possession of drugs, reckless and negligent driving and an enquiry into where he got the large sum of money from.
Van Wyk says the teen was released on bail.
Table View police released a statement indicating the matter had been handed over to the Organised Crime Unit for further investigation.
The teen is expected back in court on 20 July.
