One killed in prison gang war

One killed in a prison gang war and other 13 inmate injured, two of the injured were in a critical condition in hospital.
Regional Correctional Services commissioner Delekile Klaas, who was at the scene last night, said the fight broke out between the 26 and 28s prison gangs.
He said officials recovered makeshift weapons.
Klaas said no prison wardens had been injured during the incident.
“The alarm went off and we called for backup – even those who had knocked off were asked to come back to help maintain order. We searched the area and recovered the weapons that were used,” he said.
Meanwhile in the Eastern Cape, St Albans Prison is experiencing serious staffing issues —  an issue which aids the wheeling and dealings of gangsterism within the prison walls.
And while the Department of Correctional Services has an approved anti-gang strategy in place, it cannot be fully implemented due to prisons being understaffed.
Deputy Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Thabang Makwetla, was back in Port Elizabeth yesterday, and earlier met with ex-convicts who now represent the SA Prisoners Association for Human Rights.
