#Violence spreads to Chesterville

The unrest that has plagued the township of KwaMashu this week appears to have spread to Chesterville.
Schoolchildren took to the streets of KwaMashu on Tuesday following violent riots and the looting of foreign national-owned shops in the north Durban township the night before.
On Tuesday night there were small crowds protesting in the Chesterville, near Westville.
On Wednesday morning, burning tyres were dragged into the busy intersection of Booth and Spine Roads.
Police fired stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse crowds so they could clear the road.
Two people were detained.
Like their peers in KwaMashu, protesters from Chesterville said children were being abducted and they were adamant foreigners were to blame.
But authorities have in recent days repeatedly said that no kidnapping cases have been reported.
The violent riots in in KwaMashu have claimed one life and left several injured.
A number of foreign national run stores have been set alight and looted.

SACP leader could face criminal charges over Zuma criticism

The group of President Jacob Zuma’s supporters that protested at SACP leader Solly Mapaila’s house demanding he should stop speaking ill of the president, say they are not done with him.
The MK Inkululeko Foundation, a group of former Umkhonto we-Sizwe Military Veterans Association members, told The Star they will open criminal charges against Mapaila if he continues to say Zuma is corrupt.
The SACP has condemned the action as a defence of Zuma that was “ugly, dangerous and life-threatening”.
In addition to opening a case of intimidation, the party also challenged Zuma to distance himself from the campaign as it was done in his name.
The party will meet over the weekend to discuss how to beef up the security for Mapaila and its other leaders.
Mapaila, a fierce critic of Zuma, is the second ANC-led alliance leader whose safety has become a concern.
Outspoken ANC MP Dr Makhosi Khoza has written to ANC chief Whip Jackson Mthembu requesting security after she received death threats for speaking out against the ANC leadership.
The threats came as Police Minister Fikile Mbalula reinforced a task team investigating political killings in KwaZulu-Natal by including the Hawks.
SACP general secretary Blade Nzimande told delegates at the Cosatu central committee meeting on Monday that there were ANC leaders who intimidated them in the meeting saying “they have not been trained for nothing in MK”. Nzimande said they would not keep quiet.
On Tuesday, former tourism minister Derek Hanekom took to Twitter, also saying he would not be silenced.
Hanekom is one of the ANC national executive committee members who argued for Zuma to be removed at the weekend.
This was as ANC deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa told the Cosatu central committee meeting outside Pretoria on Tuesday that the ANC belonged to them and they must be concerned about its internal affairs.
“Nobody must be told to shut up, we are all entitled to speak and voice our concerns. Cosatu must claim its right to be consulted in decision-making,” he said.
The MK Inkululeko Foundation, formed by former MKMVA members who want to repatriate the bodies of soldiers who died in exile, warned Mapaila against criticising Zuma.
The head of the foundation, Johannes “Sparks” Motseki, said at the protest outside Mapaila’s house, the two had a heated confrontation and spoke “MK to MK”.
“I was a commander in the MK and I told him as a former soldier, he should have discipline and not talk about the alliance issues outside the alliance,” he said.
“We told him that if he continues to claim that Jacob Zuma is corrupt but doesn’t open a case against him, we will open a case against him. If he knows something about the president, he must go to the nearest police station and open a case,” Motseki said.
He said the foundation believed Zuma was the only person who would lead their agenda of repatriating soldiers who died in exile.
“We are the last generation of MK soldiers. If we die, no one will care about repatriating our comrades. We believe Jacob Zuma is the only person willing to push this agenda and we will defend him.”
Motseki said going to Mapaila’s home was not intimidation. “He is a communist party leader everywhere he goes. Whether at home or at the office. If we see him at the mall, we will address him.
“In terms of the law, anything under 15 people is not a gathering. We were just meeting him in a friendly way,” Motseki said.
But the SACP cried foul.
“This legacy of President Jacob Zuma, the so-called defence for Zuma, is no longer merely anti-intellectual and mediocre. It has become ugly, dangerous and life-threatening.”
Motseki is not new to controversy. He was implicated in the misappropriation of about R5million from the MKMVA. He was also said to be involved in a mining deal with the Gupta family and Zuma’s son, Duduzane.
This was also not the first time Mapaila’s life has been in danger this year.

DA lays treason, corruption charges against Zuma, Guptas

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has laid complaints with the police against President Jacob Zuma, his son Duduzane, three Gupta brothers, and various cabinet ministers whom they accuse of treason, corruption and racketeering in charges related to state capture.
Those mentioned in the complaint include, Atul Gupta, Ajay Gupta, Rajesh "Tony" Gupta, Ashu Chawla, Nazeem Howa, Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba, Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane, Public Service and Administration Minister Faith Muthambi, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister David (Des) van Rooyen and suspended acting CEO of Eskom Matshela Koko.
In a statement on Tuesday, DA leader Mmusi Maimane said the move to lay charges was based on "new evidence" that emerged over the weekend.
He was referring to newspaper reports based on documentation and emails which reportedly formed a paper trail that implicated the "suspects".
"This acts as a preliminary indictment, and as more information emerges, we reserve the right to supplement these charges," explained Maimane. The South African Police Service could not be immediately reached for comment on the matter.

A fourth man will appear in court on Wednesday in connection with the rape and murder of Stellenbosch University student Hannah Cornelius.

A 26-year-old man will become the fourth person charged with the rape and murder of Cornelius.
He was arrested on Monday evening outside Cloetesville.
On Tuesday, a third suspect, Nashwill Julies, appeared in court for the first time.
His case has been postponed to 28 July when he will join two other accused, Vernon Witbooi and Geraldo Parsons, in the dock.
The heavily tattooed Parson’s Facebook page features several pictures of him in jail flashing gang signs.
Meanwhile, a memorial service will be held at the New Dutch Reformed Church in Fishhoek on Friday.

Thembisile Yende's family need answers from ESKOM

The family of Thembisile Yende says it will not rest until they have received the facts related to her death from Eskom.
The 29-year-old woman was found dead at the parastatal's substation in Springs on the East Rand on Monday.
She had been reported missing two weeks ago.
It is believed that the CCTV system at the substation was not working and that there was no security guard was on duty.
A postmortem is being performed to determine the cause of her death.
The family’s Brian Sithole says they believe Eskom has the answers on the cause of Yende’s death.
“What went on there, we want answers as the family, we want answers. The company must account for what has happened in their premises.”
He says the family is not happy with the way the parastatal has treated them.
“Now when she was found there, the body was moved from the Eskom premises without the family knowing that her body is going to be moved to the forensic facility in Springs.”
Sithole says family and friends will picket outside the Springs substation to demand answers on Yende’s death.
Yende’s friends have described her as a vibrant person who loved to dance.
Her childhood friend Sibonisile Nhlapho says while she is hurt by her death, she knows Yende had found happiness.
“We were always talking about love because she was so happy."
Another friend, Mummy Magome, says a large void will be felt without her friend.
“It’s painful knowing where we come from and what I have been through with her. I can’t explain it.”
Friends and family are continuing to make their way to the home to pay their respects and offer support to the family.

Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba requested to open probe into CPS profits from social grants contract

Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba has been requested to open an investigation at the office of the chief procurement officer into the R1.1 billion profit that Cash Paymaster Services (CPS) made from social grants contract.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) says such extraordinary profiteering from public money is an insult to poor South Africans.
It says it expects that the chief procurement officer to reveal whether CPS misled the government.
DA Shadow Minister of Social Development Bridget Masango says: “As the DA, we believe that not only is that an extraordinary profiteering from public money and insult to poor South Africans, it also may contradict the Constitutional Court order from 2014 which bans CPS from making any further profits from the invalid contract.”

Stellenbosch University SRC has called for justice for the murder of Hannah Cornelius

Stellenbosch University’s Student Representative Council has called for justice for the murder of Hannah Cornelius.
The 21-year-old student was raped and killed over the weekend after she and a friend were hijacked in Stellenbosch in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Her friend survived the attack.
Two men have been charged with the crime, with a third suspect expected in court this week.
The Student Representative Council’s Alchadvon Fransman sat in on Monday’s court proceedings.
“We basically want justice and we also have to support the family because, as students, we believe that this kind of situations shouldn’t occur in students' environment. I think as a community we need to stand together and make sure that we look after each other.”

Eskom killed my sister

The family of an Eskom employee found dead at a substation in Springs is demanding answers about her death from the utility.
Thembisile Yende’s body was found at the East Rand power station on Monday night, two weeks after she was reported missing.
Her family claims they were told that the CCTV system at the power station was not operating on the day of her disappearance and that there was no security guard on duty.
Family spokesperson Mboneni Yende has criticised Eskom’s handling of the case.
“Eskom has killed my sister. From what I have, I can even tell you when we got to the gate on that very same Thursday, they only attended to us after 30 minutes.
“They saw us and it still took them 30 minutes to come to us, they could have been hiding her body. Eskom needs to tell us exactly what happened to our sister.”
Yende says they tried to trace her movements at the substation but have been told CCTV surveillance system was switched off that day.
Yende says the family is still shocked and they want answers from Eskom.
“The sad part is that on Thursday we went there, there were three workers that were inside the station working. On that day, it had been 10 days since had been missing. Are you telling me that if someone has been dead for 10 days then you can’t smell anything? That is highly impossible. The people who were there knew what they were doing.”

Land grabs not solution to land redistribution issues to land

President Jacob Zuma says land grabs are not the solution to address issues of land redistribution.
Zuma says while the land issue is critical, it should be addressed through legal channels.
The president was addressing the Indigenous and Traditional Leaders’ Indaba in Boksburg on Monday.
It was his first time in public since surviving a vote of no confidence at the African National Congress’ national executive committee meeting at the weekend.
He called on traditional leaders to help government with administrating land claims.
“That’s why there’s a necessity to have one strong legal firm. The governing party, the ANC, will discuss this critical matter at the policy conference next month.”
During his address, the president also called on traditional leaders to help government "cure the country" of the women and child abuse.
The president says the abuse of women and children goes against the country's values of Ubuntu.
“Men killing women, raping children [and] killing them is something completely out of our traditions and values. What contribution can you make?”
Earlier this month, Gauteng police discovered the bodies of four women who were murdered near Soweto.
Just two weeks ago, a 22-year-old pregnant woman was kidnapped and gang-raped while walking home in Johannesburg.
The body of a 21-year-old Stellenbosch University student was also discovered along Knorhoek Road recently. The two men accused of killing Hannah Cornelius have since been charged with rape, while a third suspect is expected to appear in court soon.

Two people have been killed in a crash on the N3 near the Marlboro Drive off-ramp.
It is understood that a truck and car collided early on Tuesday morning and burst into flames.
Preliminary investigations show that one vehicle was driving on the wrong side of the road.
The Johannesburg Metro Police Department’s Wayne Minnaar says traffic has been affected.
“It is alleged the driver of the Ford Ranger was driving on the wrong side of the freeway and traffic had to be diverted around the accident. Traffic is still very heavy but three lanes have now been opened.”

Murder accused 'rat poison' mom hands herself in

Pretoria – The 27-year-old mother of the two children found dead in a shack at Stinkwater near Hammanskraal last week handed herself over to the police on Sunday morning.
The mother of the boys, aged seven and two, arrived at the police station around 5:30am. She faces two counts of murder and will appear in the Moretele Magistrate’s Court soon.
“When speaking to the police in the holding cells, she alleged that she had used rat poison to kill her children."
“She indicated that she also attempted to kill herself by eating the poison,” said police spokesperson Constable Herman Moremi.
There was an uproar in the community last Sunday when the father of the children arrived at the home. He had received a call from the woman, telling him the children were all alone at home.
The mother had said she was in Limpopo.
He forcefully entered the shack with the help of the woman’s relatives and found both children lying lifeless in bed. Rat poison was found next to the bed.
The mother told the police that she poured the poison into their food during breakfast that morning. The children then ate the meal, Moremi said.
The woman was surprised to survive the poison and subsequently decided to run away to Bela Bela in Limpopo, where she hid for two days, and also went to Ramotse village in Temba, also near Hammanskraal.
After hearing on the radio that her children had been found dead in the shack, and that she was suspected of murdering them, she went to her brother at Eersterus on Saturday night.
Family members then advised her to hand herself in to the police and later accompanied her to Temba police station.

SA democracy will remain threaten if children are in danger

Home Affairs Minister Hlengiwe Mkhize says South Africa’s democracy will remain under threat as long as children are in danger.
Mkhize was speaking in Cape Town on Sunday at the launch of the annual child protection week.
This year’s theme is "Let us all protect children to move South Africa forward".
Mkhize says ongoing reports of children being abused or killed continues to leave South Africans angry and helpless.
“Why are all these young children not enjoying this freedom which so many people died for? If children can’t play freely along the streets, the public parks, we can’t be saying we’re enjoying our democracy.”

The university’s Martin Viljoen says they are “appalled” by the senseless murder.

3 arrested for robbery and kidnapping an Ethiopian man

The police have arrested three men believed to be part of a syndicate involved in robbing and kidnapping business people.
Earlier this week, the group kidnapped an Ethiopian businessman and held him captive in a house in Kensington for two days.
It’s understood they demanded a ransom from his family for his safe return.
The police's Lungelo Dlamini says the arrests come after several leads.
“He was taken from the OR Tambo International Airport to a house in Kensington and while he was being held up, the suspects used his cards to buy luxuries, including jewellery.”

A bus driver shot by Gangs

The police are searching for four suspects who allegedly shot a bus driver and robbed the passengers of their money, shoes and cellphones in Limpopo.
It’s understood the suspects blocked the bus along the N1 north around 10:30pm on Friday.
Authorities say after shooting the driver on his leg, they ordered him to drive further and take the Bela Bela off-ramp, where they robbed them of their belongings and stabbed one passenger in the arm.
Police’s Motlafela Mojapelo says the passengers were travelling from Johannesburg to a church service in Moria.
Mojapelo says the suspects fled in a white bakkie and the injured were taken to the hospital.
