With just less than a week to go before Parliament is due to vote on a motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma, the Democratic Alliance (DA) says that such a vote has never been more relevant or pressing.
Out on the streets around Parliament, mass protests are scheduled to take place both against and in support of Zuma.
But DA chief whip John Steenhuisen says that Speaker Baleka Mbete is being reckless by not yet having made her decision known on whether or not she will allow a secret ballot.
"She wants the House to collapse, she wants the debate to degenerate into a slanging match around secret ballots, not around the unsuitability of President Zuma continuin in office."
He adds that while it does not generally support secret ballots, the current situation warrants it.
"Given the very tangible evidence we have of intimidation both of Members of Parliament from within their party and without their party, that the current circumstance do exist for a secret ballot to be granted."
