When Thobeka Diniso went out with friends on Sunday morning, she left her husband and her three-year-old granddaughter sleeping in the house.
When she returned, she found her house in Palm Ridge extension 3, Ekurhuleni on fire!
The 40-year-old braved the flames to rescue her granddaughter, but tragically both of them died soon after.
The child died in hospital the same day and Thobeka died on Tuesday. When the fire was put out, Thobeka was found badly burnt and holding her granddaughter.
Thobeka’s brother Ncebo (32) told Daily Sun: “Neighbours tried to stop her from going inside the burning house, but she loved her granddaughter too much.”
Ncebo said when Thobeka made her decision to go into the burning house, the fire was already very strong.
Her husband died in hospital on Wednesday.
Ncebo said he was left with the responsibility of looking after his sister’s two daughters. But his biggest worry was how he would get money to take the bodies to Eastern Cape for burial.
Thobeka’s daughter Cebisa said she was at her sister’s house when she got a call that her mum’s house was on fire.
“We found firefighters trying to put out the fire,” she said.
“We had faith that they would come back from hospital alive, but it was not to be.”
